MLB's greatest players and teams ranked by the danger of their screensaver searches

Barry Bonds, Derek Jeter, and Albert Pujols are household names for any baseball fanatic. They also lead the pack of the most hazardous players in McAfee SiteAdvisor's survey of the most risky baseball screensaver searches. We tested each of Major League Baseball's 1,224 players by passing their names through Google and adding the word 'screensaver.' We compared the results with our own database of over 4.5 million site ratings for Web safety.

Searching for screensavers for Bonds, Jeter or Pujols and clicking on one of the results will give a PC a .600 Earned Risk Average (ERA) – in other words, a 60% chance of landing at a risky site. Josh Fogg of the Colorado Rockies is the only player to score higher, with 75% of his results tainted by sketchy behavior and software. Nearly three hundred players scored 30% or worse. The average ERA for the entire league was 18%.

This activity doesn't surprise us. We frequently observe spammers and spyware distributors targeting fun and games. Our recent look at the safety of screensaver searches for World Cup soccer players produced a comparable outcome.

The average Web consumer, however, is not getting the message. According to Yahoo's keyword selector tool Yahoo! had roughly 3.5 million searches in May for "screensaver," "wallpaper" and related search terms. Given that Yahoo accounts for 23% of all searches, an estimated 15.1 million total searches for these desktop visual enhancements are conducted each month. We hope this survey sends a message: baseball fans beware. Your computer can easily be demoted to the minor leagues of operability if you're not careful where you click.

Exploiting Baseball's Most Famous Rivalry

After scoring each player search for its percentage of red and yellow results, we averaged each team roster and then ranked the teams. SiteAdvisor rates sites red and yellow for a variety of security threats and annoyances including spyware, viruses, pop-ups, e-mail practices like spam, scams and browser exploits.

Teams with higher numbers have, on average, more hazardous player searches. Clubs with lower numbers will usually have less harmful crews. Of MLB's thirty teams, the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox duke it out for the top dishonor. The Pittsburgh Pirates are the safest.

One Strike And Your Computer's Out

Baseball lovers who want a screensaver of their favorite player have an inordinately high chance of stumbling upon a sketchy site. For example, a Jaret Wright fan who clicks randomly on his screensaver results page will click through to a risky site nearly six out of ten times. The top ten riskiest searches include these 53 players:

Not Safe At The Family Computer

Let's scrutinize one baseball player screensaver download. A top "organic" (non-sponsored) link for San Francisco Giant Barry Bonds is starpulse.com, a site that labels itself "the entertainment destination." Clicking their Barry Bonds wallpaper link takes a user to screensavers.com, one of the Web's most prolific distributors of adware-bundled screensavers. Every time a starpulse user downloads a file from screensavers.com, it likely earns an "affiliate" commission from screensavers.com.



The installation sequence begins with a screensavers.com redirect page that opts users into installing various unrelated programs, which appear to be presented at random. Such programs include RelevantKnowledge, WeatherBug and the Starware browser toolbar. Starware does everything it can to make itself appear useful – it adds hotlinks for reference, weather, dating, and ringtones. It even has a snazzy search field that uses Yahoo's engine. Starware is actually an adware program.



This installation concluded with a "free bonus offer" from onlinegiftrewards.com. When we submitted our e-mail address to onlinegiftrewards.com, we received 21 spammy e-mails per week. Separate installs of this screensaver also brought us to a "FREE* Video iPod" offer at superbrewards.com. When we submitted our e-mail address to superbrewards.com, we received 84 spammy e-mails per week.

Sacrifice Fly

Screensaver searches can also land unsuspecting users at sites that resulted in spammy e-mail in our inbox. The first result for Derek Jeter screensaver during a recent Google search was a sponsored link from getitfree.net. The site advertises a free Derek Jeter home jersey offer that purportedly happens to be expiring "today." It looks like a good deal, but what will happen if you click through? You'll be taken to everyfreegift.com, a site that sent us 92 spammy e-mails per week when we entered our e-mail address there.



Everyfreegift.com doesn't put an asterisk next to the word free, but scroll down on this page and you'll see this requirement: "*To receive your gift, you must complete a sponsored offer." How do these "free" product offers work? These so-called breakage sites dangle the (remote) possibility of free merchandise in order to get tempted consumers to sign up for trial offers. Explaining Our Scorecard

Since this is our first investigation involving a major U.S. sport, some readers may be learning about SiteAdvisor for the first time. Here's a quick overview about how our software works:

We establish a Web site's rating by examining a wide variety of information. First, we evaluate a Web site's e-mail practices by signing up with a unique, one-time-use e-mail address and tracking what e-mail arrives at this inbox. Then, we download any files offered by the site and test them for adware, spyware, viruses and more. Next, we inspect the Web site to see if it employs annoying practices such as excessive pop-ups, and we analyze a site's links to find connections with other sites our tests flag as red. We also test sites for so-called "drive by downloads" or breaches of browser security. Finally, we combine our own review with user feedback.

SiteAdvisor complements and enhances existing security software. Our software specializes in detecting complex threats that exploit user psychology to gain supposed "permission" to exploit a computer, including adware installations, online scams and sites which result in send excessive e-mail. SiteAdvisor also warns users before they interact with dangerous Web sites.

Complete Methodology

We took the complete rosters of the thirty Major League Baseball teams from their official site. We then ran these players' names through Google.com along with the phrase 'screensaver." When searching, we used the format 'first name last name screensaver'. We then ranked players by the percentage of first page results that linked to red or yellow rated sites. We weigh sponsored and natural links equally. (Research indicates that typical users make no distinction between the two types of results.)

We acknowledge some limitations with this survey. We limited our search to Google.com, and we only checked one page of results. We did not use common Google "hacks" like putting names in quotes to improve accuracy. And we recognize that people use many different keyword combinations in search of the perfect screensaver, combinations that yield safe site percentages both higher and lower than the ones we report today. For our top players list, we excluded from the results any player with fewer than 10 first page Google results. We ran these names the week of June 12. Because search engine results change frequently, a user searching today using our software is likely to find different results.

Spyware Strike Out

Like a pitcher's earned run average, SiteAdvisor's earned risk average is a stat best kept low. Sadly, many players suffer from Web safety ratings that would earn them a place in the Web safety Hall Of Shame. To be clear, the players and teams aren't at fault. The spammers, scammers and spyware vendors are simply exploiting their popularity. One way to stay safe is to purchase screensavers from MLB.com directly. Or, get free or paid screensavers from trusted providers. Another way is to install our McAfee SiteAdvisor browser plug-in.
